US Navy ships collided each other

From ABC News headquarters, this is World News with Charles Gibson. There was a collision today involving two US Navy vessels. A warship and a nuclear-powered submarine in the straits of Hormuz. A high-level investigation is under way, asking how could that happen. Here’s Martha Raddatz.

This picture of the nuclear-powered USS Hartford was taken just after the collision. A crash bad enough to injure 15 sailors, damage both vessels, and cause a 25,000 gallon fuel spill. The submarine and the USS New Orleans were on regular deployments moving through one of the most strategically important waterways on earth. It was one in the morning. The submarine submerged in fairly shallow water when it was either run over or ram into the ship.

That’s because submarines are designed to be invisible. But the sub’s crew should’ve been carefully monitoring the ship traffic. Tonight, the Navy insists that the nuclear propulsion plan onboard the submarine was not damaged. But investigators will have many questions about how this could happen. The answer is likely human error. Martha Raddatz, ABC News, Washington.

Just off the coast of Iran, an American nuclear-powered submarine collided today with another US Navy ship. It happened in the Strait of Hormuz. That narrow waterway that separates Iran from the Arabian Peninsula. The Navy says 15 sailors aboard the sub, the USS Hartford, were injured, but did return to duty. And there was no damage to the sub’s nuclear propulsion system. But the other ship, USS Oregon, did rupture a fuel tank.

US Navy ships collided each other

In china, an official newspaper says the Chinese Navy will not increase patrols in the South China Sea where US Navy ship ran into trouble early this month. Tonight, CBS News obtained the first Known video of the incident. Here’s national security correspondent David Martin.

The Pentagon refused to release this video of Chinese vessels harassing an unarmed American surveillance ship, afraid it would damage relations. The CBS news filed “A freedom of information act” request there were no legal ground for keeping these pictures secret! It happened two weeks ago about 80 miles south of Hainan Island. Outside Chinese territorial waters, but inside what China claims as a special economic zone.

If Hainana Island rings a bell, it’s because that’s where Chinese jets forced a Navy surveillance plane down eight years ago at the start of the Bush administration. The USNS Impeccable was towing a sonar array searching the ocean depths. The top admiral in the Pacific called it “unlawful and dangerous” and sent a warship to guard against further harassment.
