Taking the wheel. The president throws out the boss at GM and lays down the law to Detroit automakers taking government money. What they need to do to survive. Heart beat. It’s the number one killer in the country and tonight, there’s new information about heart disease. Red alert. After facing down the rising water, now a big decision awaits those along the red river. And moms on a mission. Bring Haves and Have-nots together. It’s their way of making a difference. Nightly News begins. From NBC News world headquarters in New York, this is NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams.

Good evening. Someone earlier today said GM now stands for government motors. President Obama has made one of the biggest decisions of his presidency. He took out the boss at General Motors. And while GM will get enough government money to live on for now, Chrysler, as we know it, may not. Ford is alone among the Big 3 in not requesting government help. GM’s long-time boss Rick Wagner is out of a job. The stock went down 96% during his time with GM.

There is word tonight two American journalists detained by North Korea earlier this month are now expected to be put on trial for illegally entering that country. Euna Lee and Laura Ling work for a Current TV, the California-based media company founded by former Vice President Al Gore. For the latest on this story, we go to our justice correspondent Pete Williams in Washington. Pete, good evening.

Brian? Because the State Department has no formal relations with North Korea, it’s working through Swedish diplomats who met with the two American journalists today. The two, UNA LEE and LOURA LING who is the sister of TV journalist LISA LING work for Current TV and were in China for a story about North Korean refugees! They were arrested March 17th by guards on N Korea’s north eastern border with China. North Korea is accusing them of “illegal entry and hostile acts” and American officials says the Chinese government is helping as an intermediary중재인, but the US is trying not to raise the profile of the two women, concern that elevating their status in the eyes of the N. Koreans could make it harder to get them released. Brian, Alright, Pete Williams in our Washington, bureau, Pete THanks
