Remaking the military. The Defense Secretary wants to act some of the biggest weapons programs and no new helicopters for the President. This is the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates is out to~하려고 애쓰다 remake the US military. He put out발표하다 a spending plan today that carries a price tag of more than a half trillion dollars. That’s 19 billion more than the current budget. But David Martin reports Gates wants to cut a number of expensive programs and even the commander in chief would be affected.

The bill for fighting two wars while at the same time buying high-tech weapons for future wars finally came due지불 기일이 . And Defense Secretary Gates put his money on today’s wars. “This is a reform budget reflecting lessons learned in Iraq and Afghanistan.” He added $2 billion to next year’s budget for unmanned drones무인정찰기 like the Predator, one of the most in demand weapons in Iraq and Afghanistan. And stop the F-22, a super sonic stealth fighter which is undoubtedly the hottest aircraft in the world, but hasn’t seen a day of combat.

He also halted정지 the army’s $87 billion plan for a new generation of combat vehicles that would be linked by the latest in information technology. “The secretary Gates said, LOOK, your costs are going up that there’s too much unproven technology here. We need to take a big step back.” Likewise마찬가지로 for the new presidential helicopter whose costs have doubled with 6 years behind schedule and had even the President wondering why he needed it. “The helicopter I have now seems perfectly adequate충분한 알맞은 to me. Of course, I’ve never had a helicopter before.”

Every program cancelled means jobs loss in a congressman’s backyard. This plant in Amesbury, Massachusetts which makes radar absorbing흡수 material for the F-22 may now have to lay off nearly half its workforce. Parts for the F-22 are made in 44 states and Lockheed Martin which builds the plane claimed a total of 95,000 jobs were on the line which makes this the understatement of the day억제된 표현.“There’s no question that a lot of these decisions would be controversial쟁점이 되는.” Congress gets the final say and the B22 OSPRY and the B1 Bomber are just two of the big ticket items previous defense secretaries tried to kill, but congress bought anyway! Secretary Gates said he did not take politics into consideration when making these decisions. But Katie, you can be sure congress will.
