Tonight, we’re taking a closer look at the growing number of schools going down to 4-day weeks as they scramble to slash급히 삭감하다 budgets in lean결핍의 times. In at least 18 states, some schools are already operating on 4-day schedules and more districts across the country are considering the move. But the shorter weeks spark sharp debate. ABC’s Kate Snow went to Colorado, the state with the most schools already running on 4-day weeks.

In the district surrounding Pueblo, Colorado, school buses log기록하다 a combined 7300 miles every single day. Closing school on Friday could save a bundle거금. “Out of a $60 million budget, we’ve got to cut about $4.5 million out of our budget. Going to a 4-day week will net us about $1.2 million in savings.” “Let’s bring down one penny.” The school week would be 4 longer days which means only losing 50 hours of class time over the school year. Not every parent thinks it’s a smart idea.

“What are the concerns do you have? Um, the quality of education they would be getting… Asking working parents to find daycare.”

There’s not a lot of research on the 4-day school week, but there are a lot of models here in Colorado. Pueblo school board has been reaching out to some of the more than 60 school districts that are already on the 4-day week in the state. In rural시골 Limon, Colorado, schools went to a 4-day week 3 years ago with overwhelming community support. "It gave us a chance to have a day if we needed to make a doctor's appointment or something that we could do it without pulling them out of school.”

Parents rely on family and friends for day care. The costs are down 10%. Morale사기 and attendance are up. Limon's standardized test results remain above average. Those 7th graders confessed they’re not doing a lot of studying on Fridays. “What do you on Fridays?” “Hanging out. Sleeping. Hanging out. …..”

At a time when the President is calling for more quality hours in the classroom, many in the education field say a 4-day week is all wrong. "Our concern is that we are not internationally competitive and we need to be more so. And this direction is not gonna make us more internationally competitive.” But with dwindling감소하는 resources, school boards face tough choices, cut a day, or cut teachers or programs. Kate Snow, ABC News, Pueblo, Colorado.
