From NBC News world headquarters in New York, this is NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. Good evening in for Brian Williams, tonight, I’m Anne Curry. There is a new crack in the wall of secrecy that has long protected Swiss Bank accounts and wealthy customers who’ve hidden fortunes in the Swiss vaults금고. Officials in Switzerland now say the country will cooperate in cases of international tax evasion탈세. NBC’s Jim Maceda has this story.

For more than 70 years, its secret bank accounts have defined특정짓다 Switzerland as much as its new neutrality중립국 or its clocks, surviving Nazi spies, World War II, and even attempts by Jewish families to reclaim이용하다 assets자산 seized몰수하다 during the holocaust. This stuff of Hollywood! Thomas Crown hiding a big heist장물 in a Geneva bank or Jason Borne seeking identity in a Swiss account number on a chip implant. But today, Switzerland agreed to open the door to its fabled꾸며낸 numbered accounts on a case-by-case basis.

Not doing so would’ve blacklisted its Swiss banks, risking tens of thousands of jobs. “We decided for the best of our country because it’d part of an international effort to improve our economy”, he said. With some $ 2 trillion of global wealth in its banks, Switzerland is the largest and latest tax haven세금피난처 to cave into굴복하다international pressure after Liechtenstein and Austria. Andorra and Luxembourg are expected to follow.

And on the hills of Burney Madorf’s multi-billion dollar Ponzi scheme폰지사기 and other cases of massive fraud사기, US prosecutors now hope this Swiss move will give them access to more than 50,000 accounts belonging to mostly wealthy Americans in an ongoing battle with Swiss bank UBS. “If you’re wealthy and you’ve been hiding money in Switzerland, and not reporting foreign accounts and the income from it on your US tax returns, you got a real problem today.”

But defending UBS today, the Swiss government warned it would not compromise더럽히다 bank confidentiality기밀성 , unless there was specific and justified cause. Tax experts say the crackdown is real that in the current global financial crisis, Havens like Switzerland or the British channel Irelands are soft predictable targets. But don’t count생각하다havens out just yet. Tax experts predict that money will be stashed감추다 and laundered세탁하다 where people where people least expected, long after secret Swiss accounts are gone.
