종교인 급감 되다

Losing faith. A new study says 15% of Americans report they have no religion at all. From ABC News headquarters, this is World News with Charles Gibson. We have a closer look tonight at changes in the role of religion in this country how Americans worship or whether they worship at all. The latest research shows sweeping changes across the country and across many faiths. In one of the most dramatic shifts, a new survey finds 15% of Americans now say they have no religion. A figure that’s almost doubled in 18 years. In fact, almost all religious groups have lost followers. Here’s Dan Harris.

America is still a predominantly유력한 널리 퍼진 Christian country. But it’s apparently becoming both less Christian and less religious. According to today’s poll, the percentage of Americans who define themselves as Christian dropped from 86% to 76% between 1990 and 2008. Meanwhile, the 15% of Americans who have no religious preference are now a larger category than all other major religious groups except for Catholics and Baptists침례교인.

In the last 18 years, almost all religious denominations 종파, 교파 have lost ground. Mainline Protestants개신교 are down the most. For example, Methodists감리교 have gone from 8% to 5%. Baptists are down from 19.3% to 15.8%. And Jews are down from 1.8% to 1.2%. Meanwhile, atheists무신론자, while still small, have nearly doubled from 900,000 to 1,600,000. But researchers say there’s something more going on here, just because people are abandoning organized religion, doesn’t mean they’re abandoning faith.

This is something I’ve found when I spoke to people on Twitter today. "I no longer attend church, but still pray to Jesus," said Sean Whitney. "I dropped out of the Catholic faith years ago. However, it doesn't mean I have stopped believing in God," said Carmen Riviera. “We are becoming a nation of spiritually anchored뿌리박고있는 people who are not traditionally religious.”

There is one major growth area in American Christianity. Evangelicals복음주의자 who have grown from 5.0% to 11.8% of the population. And with the economy now in free fall, many mega churches say they're seeing increased attendants. They are praying that perhaps hard times will draw Americans back to what they’ve left. Dan Harris, ABC News, New York.
