Hi, everybody! Welcome to the Wall Street Journal Report. I’m Maria Bartiromo. Retail sales fall, jobless claims실업수당 rise! Is it a bump in the road to recovery? Or more like a crater? Here is a look at what’s making news as we head into new week on Wall Street! Not a lot of green shoots (경기 후퇴에서) 회복이나 발전의 조짐 to report this week in the economy! And the news was discouraging indicating we remain in that economic slowdown. First time, jobless claims, the number of workers filing new claims for unemployment rose last week to a level of 637,000, ending an easing trend in the past couple of weeks. The rate is one of the predictors of the monthly unemployment rate! Sales at US retailers fell for a straight month in April, tumbling four tenth of the percent… slightly worse than analysts’ expectations. Consumers account for about 70% of growth in the US economy!

 

The markets fell sharply on those retail sales figures on Wednesday after showing weakness early in the week. But they bounced back slightly on Thursday! On Friday, the markets fell. 100s of Chrysler dealers got the grim news they hoped they would not hear! The dealers started getting letters on Thursday from the bankrupt automaker that they would be shut down! Chrysler plans to eliminate 789 of its 3200 dealers as part of that restructuring process.
