The growing storm over the fate of two American journalists in North Korea. Is there a price for their freedom? From NBC News world headquarters in New York, this is NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. North Korea has sentenced two American journalists to 12 years in a labor camp in a case that is forcing something of a showdown between the two nations. Our chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell with us from the State Department with more on this story tonight. Andrea? Good evening.

It was in this border region between North Korea and China that the two journalists were arrested. Euna Lee and Laura Ling of Current TV were working on a story. They’ve been held since March. The State Department doesn’t even know where they are being held. “We’re engaged in all possible ways through every possible channel to secure their release, and we once again urge North Korea to grant their immediate release on humanitarian grounds.”

President Obama and Secretary Clinton have both talked to former Vice President Al Gore whose Current TV employs the women about going to Pyongyang to try to negotiate their release. Experts say this is not about nuclear weapons. Instead, Pyongyang is focused on border security and keeping foreign journalists out as it deals with an internal power struggle. The ailing dictator Kim Jung Il has designated지명하다 his youngest son Kim Jong Un seen here as an adolescent젊은나이 as a successor.

In a rare interview in Macao, his oldest son Kim Jung Nam seemed to confirm that today. “I think this kind of question you have to ask to my father or my brother now. Not to me.” Tonight, the families of the two women have issued a statement apologizing to North Korea saying that the women mistakenly crossed the border and urging compassion연민 동정 and clemency관용. And the families say they are very concerned about the mental state and the physical wellbeing of these women and want them return to their families.

Welcome to World News. Tonight from Boston. Convicted. North Korea finds two American journalists guilty of grave crimes. They’re sentenced to 12 years hard labor. From ABC News, this is World News with Charles Gibson, reporting tonight from Boston.

Today, top US officials expressed their hope that North Korea will set aside유보하다 the 12 year sentence. “We hope that the North Koreans will grant clemency관용 and deport them.” But that may be wishful thinking. Laura Ling and Euna Lee are now a powerful bargaining chip. And that raises the stakes for the Obama administration. “The game is far from over. In fact, I think a very important part of a game is about to start.”

Just weeks ago, another nuclear test. And there’re signs North Korea is planning more missile tests. The US has been pushing hard for sanctions. “We are not intending to continue a policy of rewarding provocation.” The two women will likely be sent to one of six known labor camps. What little we do know about prison conditions in North Korea is downright철처한 appalling지독한. But some camps are said to give special treatment to high ranking prisoners. Specifically adequate food and the chance for a family visit. “….and my sister Laura and Euna Lee” Their families members including journalist Lisa Ling have been waging a high profile campaign to win their release.
