A fatal shooting in of all places the Holocaust Museum in Washington. An 88-year-old man with a gun and disturbing reports tonight about him and his motives. Nightly News begins now. From NBC News world headquarters in New York, this is NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams.
Good evening. It’s been flooded with visitors ever since it opened. Many of them moved to tears by the time they leave. The Holocaust Museum in Washington isn’t like a lot of the other attractions in that city. It is somber and serious. And it teaches a lesson about not repeating the murders and hatred of the past. And today it was the scene of a murder. An elderly man with a gun apparently driven by long simmering당장이라도 폭발할 것 같은 hatred. Our justice correspondent Pete Williams is in Washington to start off the broadcast tonight. Pete, good evening.
Brian, good evening. The Holocaust Museum has been prepared for something just like this, since it opened 16 years ago. And tonight, everyone from Museum goers to the mayor is praising the response of Museum security guards who reacted almost instantly.
It was just before 1PM at the US Holocaust Museum about a mile and a half from the Capitol building, one of the most popular museums in America. Police say a man carrying a 22 caliber rifle boldly walked into the entrance raised the weapon and began firing. “Someone’s like run, run, run. Someone got shot. Run, run, run.” “There were shattered glass.”
Remarkably police and federal agents say only two victims were wounded. The gunman himself and the security guard, Steven Tyrone Johns, who died a few hours later. Investigators say the guards stopped the gunman from getting beyond the security checkpoint. Federal investigators identified the gunman as an 88-year-old man, James W. von Brunn of eastern Maryland. They say he maintained this racist website filled with anti-Semitic rants노호 야단법석 saying Jews were taking over the government.
In 1981, he was arrested at age 61 for barging난폭하게 뛰어들다 into the headquarters of the federal reserve in Washington carrying two guns. He got as far as the room where the Board of Governor was meeting. He served 7 years in prison. On his website, he blamed, “a Negro jury and a Jew Judge.” A group that tracks white supremacists says he was an active member of groups that denied the holocaust. Former Defense Secretary William Cowen was in the museum today when the shots were fired.
Tonight, investigators are visiting other targets that von Brunn may have had in mind based on a note he had in his car listing about 12 places including the National Cathedral. But so far, police and the FBI believe he acted entirely on his own. Brian? Pete Williams on our sad lead story tonight. Pete? Thanks.
