And class acts. The challenges laid out for the class of 2009. “Give something back.” “Go on dreaming.” This year’s graduates are our persons of the week. From ABC News headquarters, this is World News with Charles Gibson. This is graduation season when noted successful people tell graduates to go forth and fill in the blank. It’s all good advice. But this year the class of 2009 faces more than its share of challenges. Still they all leave school with such optimism, such wide smiles, such hope.

 

“Wow, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Doctor of Humane Letters. I love it.” “Oh, yes. I’m gonna have everyone call me Doctor now.” “I don’t know if you’re aware of this. But these honorary degrees are apparently pretty hard to come by.” “This is your moment. You’ve made it to the big leagues and you are up to bat.” “We need young people like you to step up. We need your daring. We need your enthusiasm. We need your energy. We need your imagination.” “In short, you’ve been drafted to help clean up this mess. You actually have to change the world.”

 

Can’t you see the sunshine? Can’t you just feel the moonshine? “You won’t waste your talent in education if you use them in service to others.” “There must be on this planet at least one person who needs you. One person you can help. Don’t turn away. Help.” “Go on dreaming. Go on being the idealistic people you are. Go on being the ones who believe that poverty can….can indeed be made history.” “Graduates. When times get tough and fear sets in, think of those people who paved the way for you and those who are counting on you to pave the way for them.”

 

“I didn’t go to college at all…any college. And I’m not saying you’ve wasted your time or your money. But look at me. I’m a huge celebrity.” “We did it. Class of 09. we’re graduating. Let’s party. Come on.” “Congratulation Sara. You did it.” And so we choose the class of 2009 with the nod to their commencement speakers.
