Tonight, a battle may be coming for custody of Michael Jackson’s children as the family makes plans for a memorial and new video surfaces of his last performance. This is the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. Good evening, everyone. The Michael Jackson’s story has taken yet another strange turn. One of his former wives now may want custody of their two children. Jackson wanted his mother to raise them. So a court battle may be coming. Meanwhile planning continues for a memorial next week. And there is new video of Jackson just days before he died. Ben Tracey is in Los Angeles tonight. Ben? Tell us about this video.

 

Well, Katie, you know, before Michael Jackson’s death, he was rehearsing here at the Staple Center in Los Angeles for those 50 sold-out shows in London this summer. Now today, the promoters put out footage of his final rehearsal. And in it, he looks ready to make a comeback. This is it. New video of Michael Jackson rehearsing just two days before he died. Today he saga that has unfolded since the superstar’s death a week ago, took another turn.

 

Debby Rowe, Michael Jackson’s former wife and a mother of his first two children, told the local news station she now wants custody. She gave up her parental rights in 2001 and was paid a multi-million dollar settlement. At the time of Jackson’s molestation trial in 2005, Rowe tried to regain her rights, but was paid anther settlement. And in Jackson’s will, he says he wants his mother Katherine to be his children’s guardian or his friend Diana Ross.

 

Welcome to World News. Tonight, Custody Fight. Michael Jackson’s ex-wife now says she wants guardianship over two children. And we see video of one of his last rehearsals. From ABC News headquarters, this is World News with Charles Gibson. Jackson’s former wife Debby Rowe said today she intends to fight for custody of Jackson’s two eldest children. For now, the children stay with Jackson’s mother. Meanwhile, video was released today of a Jackson rehearsal just before he died. Jim Avola is in Los Angels.

 

Michael Jackson’s last taped performance. A dress rehearsal two nights before he died. Sounding strong and moving in Jackson’s signature move style. Those who watched him perform were convinced he is healthy enough for a 50 concert tour. After all, he looked like the old Michael Jackson.
