Good evening. Im Amy Robach in tonight for Brian Williams. And tonight, president Obama has again put himself squarely정면으로 in the center of controversy over race. This afternoon, he made a surprise appearance in the White House press room and admitted he made a poor choice of words when he said a white police officer had acted stupidly by arresting a black scholar from Harvard. The president also said he had called the arresting officer who is now telling his story on camera for the first time.

Good evening. The White House press corps had gathered for its daily briefing this afternoon awaiting White House spokesman Robert Gibbs. And then who walked in? The president himself! unannounced and most unusual. He came to talk about the Cambridge, Massachusetts incident between professor Henry Louise Gates and the local police. This day started with the White House putting out the word the president would have no more to say about the arrest of his friend, a prominent black scholar, by a white police sergeant or about the president’s comment that the sergeant had acted, “stupidly.” But it turned out that would not be the last word after all. At midday, a multi-racial group of police union officials held a news conference to defend the Cambridge, Massachusetts sergeant and demand an apology from the president. Now short time after that, president Obama made an extraordinary appearance in the White House briefing room where he made a surprise announcement.
