From NBC News world headquarters in New York, this is NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. Good evening. Former president Bill Clinton has traveled to North Korea, one of the darkest and most mysterious nations on earth and tonight he’s flying back to the United States with two American journalists who’ve held there since March. The former American president met with the North Korean dictator Kim Jung Il today shortly there after we learned the two American women had been pardoned사면 by the government for their alleged crimes. Then we learned they’ve been clear to go home.

Good evening. Even after leaving office, presidents of the United States hold a special status allowing them to fulfill roles no one else can. And so it was today. Former president Bill Clinton secretly flew to North Korea, a nation with which the US has no diplomatic relations, to win freedom for two American journalists. Laura Ling and Euna Lee were sentenced to twelve years of hard labor for crossing North Korea’s border illegally. After he met with North Korea’s leader Kim Jung Il, the women were pardoned.

Tonight, former president Bill Clinton wins the release of two American journalists jailed by North Korea and they’re all heading home. This is the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. Good evening, everyone. The story was headline news today all over the country. An American President making a surprise trip to communist North Korea. But it wasn’t Barack Obama, it was Bill Clinton, the 42nd president whose wife is normally the top diplomat in the family, was on a private mission to win the release of two American journalists and he did.

 

Euna Lee and Laura Ling arrested in March 17th are freed tonight and on their way home along with the former president. Barry Peterson is our Asia correspondent. Barry? Good evening, Katie.
