<긴급> 두기자 미국 도착

Broadcast tonight, the homecoming. A former president brings home two Americans held prisoner by a dictator. Welcome to World News. Tonight, homecoming. An emotional return for two Americans held captive by North Korea. How did their release come about and what does it mean for US foreign policy? From ABC News headquarters, this is World News with Charles Gibson. Good evening. Nearly, five months of captivity in North Korea for American journalists, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, ended with a flood of emotion just after dawn this morning in California.

And you could see their excitement as they came off the plane. You could feel their relief of being united with family and understand their gratitude to former president Clinton who brought them back from North Korea and former vice president Gore who worked behind the scenes to make it all happen. We begin tonight with Kate Snow in Los Angeles.

They waited 140 days for this. The joy of reunion captured by a 4-year-old skipping to greet her mother. Euna Lee’s daughter Hana had been asking for her mother all these months. Her father kept telling her mommy’s on a business trip. Laura Ling’s mother couldn’t stop hugging her. Just a day before her daughter had been a prisoner in North Korea condemned to 12 years of hard labor. “Suddenly, we were told that we were going to a meeting. When we walked in through the doors, we saw standing before us President Bill Clinton. We were shocked, but we knew instantly in our hearts that the nightmare of our lives was finally coming to an end.”

His mission accomplished. President Clinton left the talking today to former vice president Al Gore who founded Current TV where the women work. “Your families had been unbelievable. Unbelievable.” “Well, I feel so good. Thank you so much for your support.” The women spent the rest of the day relaxing with their families. “Um…I know that there will be a sushi dinner at some point really soon.” Today’s menu? Fresh fruit and that Chinese watercress soup made by their mother. Neither woman gave any details of their ordeal today, but US officials are certainly looking forward to hearing their story.

President Obama said today he was extraordinarily relieved. “The reunion that we’ve all seen on television I think is a source of happiness.” “To our loved ones, friends, colleagues, and to the complete strangers with the kindness of hearts, we could feel your love all the way in North Korea. It is what kept us going in the darkest of hours. It is what sustained our faith that we would come home.'' According to Laura’s sister Lisa, the two women were kept in separate places while they were in North Korea, a spokeswoman tells me they are not sure what they’re going to do next, Charlie, they are exhausted. This is a difficult time. A lot to think about and they’ll need some time. Charlie.
