US Predator aircraft are kept at secret airbases in Pakistan ready to launch. The imagery from this aircraft is beamed back to military bases in the US. At 1 AM this Wednesday in Pakistan, communications intercepts led officials to believe Mehsud was staying with one of his wives in Waziristan. Soon after a predator aircraft sent back an image Mehsud and his wife on the roof. She was messaging his legs which were apparently causing him pain from diabetes. That’s when the missile was launched. Today, the Taliban confirmed Mehsud’s death. ABC’s Nick Schifrin is in Pakistan.

 

As locals have cut off the village where the attack took place, a massive funeral has been held. But still it’s virtually impossible for anyone from outside that village to gain access to the area. Physical confirmation of the death may be impossible. But today the Taliban was already meeting to choose Mehsud’s successor. Abdullah Mehsud is believed responsible for the deaths of at least 1200 people in Pakistan including former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. And fighters he sent into Afghanistan killed countless US troops.

 

In this interview with Al Zazeera, Mehsud said we prayed to god to give us the ability to destroy the White House, New York and London. Very soon, we will witness the miracles of Jihad. There is no guarantee that Mehsud’s death will mean violence is reduced when Al Qaeda’s Abu Musad Aljakaree was killed in Iraq in 2006 little changed. But today the Pakistani government vowed to continue to attack Mehsud’s network. Charlie?

Noordin Mohammed Top is his name. He’s suspected in every major attack in Indonesia including the recent well-planned suicide blast at the Ritz Carlton and the Marriott Hotels in Jakarta and also the attacks at the resort island of Bali in 2002.
