Welcome to World News. Tonight, motor trend and a headline we haven’t heard in some time. Rising sales and growing customer satisfaction for the US auto industry. From ABC News headquarters, this is World News with Charles Gibson. Good evening. We have begun this broadcast so many times with reports about the US auto industry. Rarely good news. Sales down, jobs lost, factories closed, bankruptcies filed. But today, good news. GM says it is increasing production by 60,000 vehicles this year and reinstating복직시키다 more than 1300 jobs. Thanks in large measure to the Cash for Clunker’s program.

 

Ford raised its sales forecast by a half million vehicles. And a new survey out today shows growing customer satisfaction with American cars. So Sharon Alfonsi joins us now. Sharon? Well, Charlie, one dealer early we spoke to today said before the cash for clunker’s program, he had 34 Chevy Cobalts on his lot. Today he’s down to just one. Automakers are anxious to get those new cars into the show room fast.

 

At GM factories today, something very different. A race to make more cars. GM is now rushing to restock다시 채우다 dealers after a spike in sales from the cash for clunker’s program. Today, the company announced they’re adding shifts in Canada and Ohio where GM builds its Chevy Cobalt, the company’s most fuel efficient car. And they’re not just adding jobs. They’re adding overtime for more than 10,000 workers in Indiana, Tennessee, Kansas, and Michigan.

 

Glimmer of hope for workers who become so used to bad news. Ford, Honda, Toyota and Hyundai have also announced they plan to make more cars. Another encouraging sign today, a consumer satisfaction survey finds GM and Ford enjoying some of their biggest gains. Still analysts say it’s too early to celebrate. Even with today’s increase, the company will build just over  million cars this year, down almost 40% from last year. Analysts say the road to recovery may not be a smooth one.

 

And some of those 1300 workers who’re being reinstated could be back on the job as early as this week. Others who’ve been working 4 days a week are now moving to 5 days a week. And Charlie? Today, none of those workers were complaining about not having the Fridays off. They’re welcoming the work.
