“It’s four little words TELL ME YOUR STORY. And that’s all we do. Tell him a story.” Tonight, we tell the story of the man who invented 60 Minutes. “It’s a kind of a magazine for television.” Remembering Don Hewitt. This is the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. Good evening. When the telephone rings, chances are you don’t automatically think of Alexander Graham Bell. And when the television news comes on, you don’t think of Don Hewitt. But may be at least tonight, you should. Because if any one person deserves credit for inventing what you’re watching right now, that person was Don. Our friend and colleague, the first producer of this broadcast and the legendary creator of 60 Minutes, died today of pancreatic cancer. He was 86. Katie Couric tells us the story of the man who made 60 Minutes tick.

 

Don Hewitt had no problem divulging the secret behind the success of 60 Minutes. He even made it sound simple. “It’s four little words. Tell me your story. And that’s all we do. Tell him a story.” While 60 Minutes may be his best known accomplishment, it was his more than 60 years in news that define the medium. “Alright. What we will do is this….” “And it was up to me what the rules were. What they had to do. What they didn’t have to do.”

 

It turned out to be much more than a debate. It was the first demonstration of TV’s enormous visual impact on politics. Voters who listened on the radio felt Richard Nixon won, but those who watched thought Kennedy did. And it may have cost Nixon the election. “ When the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite became the first network half hour newscast, Don Hewitt was the executive producer.

 

He loved the job, but new management at CBS didn’t love him. Sent to the documentary unit, the workplace equivalent of Siberia, Don was devastated, and then had his best idea yet. “It’s a kind of a magazine for television.” “New opening. Take one.” Always able to laugh at himself. A charming Dreaded man who loved to tell a story and changed the face of television. 60 Minutes told nearly 3500 stories When Don was in charge.
