녹색 성장 도시

Center stage. This city, Pittsburg, practically shuts down to host the world. Tonight, we’ve already seen the first clash with police. And on the way here, president Obama wins a big one in his effort to change the way the world sees the US. Plus the transformation of this city from steel gray all the way to green. Nightly News begins now. They once made about half of all the steel in this country in this city. Big heavy industry. Factory smoke and smokestacks. It was the work that built this city. But when a lot of that ran away, the city decided to go another way. We have that story from our chief environmental affairs correspondent Anne Thompson.

Clean and green are usually not the first words the world associates with Pittsburg. Its image forged in the smoky greedy business of steel. One writer described Pittsburg as hell with the lid off. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright said it should be abandoned. Not any more. Once synonymous with pollution, today Pittsburg touts itself as an environmentally aware city.

The centerpiece? Its convention center. The site of the G20 meeting. It is the largest green building of its kind in the world. Using 35% less energy than a traditionally designed facility, savings that could power 1900 homes. “What can the world learn from this convention center?” “Well, I think the world can learn a lot about us sustainable practices and the fact that having conventions and hosting large events like the G20 doesn’t have to be environmentally degrading.”

Natural light illuminates three quarters of the exhibition space. One of many decisions made not because it’s politically correct, but because it’s economically smart. The city’s once filthy three rivers lined with steel mills are now home to a 13-mile chain of parks. The history of taking steel mill sites and converting them to environmental and recreational treasures is nothing short of amazing. City officials say going green is paying off in new tourists, new business, and new respect. “We do it because we bellieve it creates jobs!” Jobs they say make Pittsburg beacon봉화 등대 of the future instead of a relic of the past.
