멸종위기의 몽고족
One of the most remote parts of the world where an ancient way of life is endangered. Reindeer 순록are an integral없어서는 안되는 part of that life. They are endangered. And so are the people who depend on them. Clarissa Ward made the long voyage to northern Mongolia.
To reach the Dukha nomads유목민 of northern Mongolia, you have to fly, drive, ride and tread걷다 across some of the roughest terrain in the world. “Oh yeah I ain’t get down the horse road. That’s for sure.” And then, out of nowhere, you see a Dukha reindeer herder목동The Dukha have lived with reindeer for more than 3000 years. They raised them primarily for milk and for transport. Carvings조각made from deer antlers뿔provide a small income. “Oh that one’s a beauty.”
We love our reindeer, says Sangin, every part of our life is connected to them. “Oh my goodness. Hi? Hi? You’re not actually supposed to touch the antlers. Apparently, it’s very sensitive for them. They don’t really like it. But it’s very tempting유혹하는.” Life here is simple and hard. No electricity. No running water. In winter, temperatures can drop to 40 below zero. 10 times a year, The Dukha change camp to find fresh grazing방목하다 spots. “The land is their home and the sky is their roof.”
Dan Plumly works to empower허용허다 and protect nomadic reindeer herders from numerous threats to their existence. “Don’t let children play with the needles.” There are just 220 Dukha left since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of state subsidies보조금. They have struggled. Increased gold mining and logging are destroying the reindeer habitat. And more and more, the young are choosing life in cities over this. I could never live anywhere else, says Sangin, but the younger generation must decide for themselves.
The Dukha are starting to embrace받아들이다 elements of the modern world, but at their own pace. “It’s not that we have something to teach them. It’s that they have something to teach us how to live on this earth in a simple way with humility겸손.” Living among nature and all its beauty. Clarissa Ward, ABC News, Ming Bullock, Mongolia.
