It’s hard to believe, but it’s true. Scout’s Honor.

Zackary Kristy, Cub Scout, Little Leaguer and member of his church youth group, is now suspended from first grade at his elementary school in Newark, Delaware. What did this 6-year-old try to bring the school? “I got a call saying, you know, this is a dangerous weapon.” The dangerous weapon was this fork, knife, spoon camping utensil Zackary brought to use at lunch. “This is something we let him eat dinner with.”

The knife part violated the district’s code of conduct. Students who possess the dangerous objects in school settings face severe consequences. Severe in this case meant 45 days of classes at his school for troubled kids. His mom and her fiancé plan to home-school Zackary instead. It’s a part of the zero tolerance world schools operate in post-Columbine. The school district’s policy is enforced regardless of intent, and does not take into consideration a child’s age. Zero tolerance must have room for common sense because to them, this is not the face of trouble. Jim Axelrod, CBS News, New York.
