<문화> LA 필하모니의 20 천재 컨덕터

And a prodigy. Inspiring disadvantaged young people to make beautiful music. Our person of the week. From ABC News headquarters, this is World News with Charles Gibson. He is the new conductor of one of America’s great orchestras. And he is just 28 years old. 28! That, in itself, is pretty amazing to be such a prodigy. But how he learned to love music and where he learned it is amazing as well. As is the way he is giving back.

Gustavo Dudamal’s first concert with the LA philharmonic was Saturday night. A free concert at the Hollywood ball. And it was a triumph for him and for the orchestra. But how did Dudamal begin the evening’s program? Conducting in a t-shirt, an orchestra of kids. Dudamal is being called the most exciting talents since Leonard Bornstein. And at Saturday’s concert, 18,000 people came out to watch.

A perfect opportunity to show off the philharmonic and his orchestra of kids.

For the past years, he prepared to take the baton at the philharmonic. Dudamel has been working with this youth orchestra. Most of the kids from south LA had never held an instrument before. It’s the same way Dudamal learned about music in Venezuela. He was just another kid in a program called EL SYSTEMA teaching a quarter million disadvantaged young people about music. “We are trying to save life of thousand of kids of children.”

Dudamal played violin, but he wanted a more powerful instrument. “It was magic to watch the conductor.”At just 18, Dudamal was conducting the national youth orchestra. Music is a human right, he says, as everyone deserves access, particularly kids. “I think for them is a new life…..is totally a new life. And you can see the change. Not only how they play, now they can see their future.”

And so we choose Gustavo Dudamal. He says all those young people are learning to be part of a team, part of a community, some thing they don’t learn on the streets of Los Angeles. And that is World news for this Friday , I am Charley Gibson. And I hope you had a good day. For all of us at ABC News, have a great weekend.
