The higher, the better

 

In working class Midland, Texas, high gas prices aren’t hurting Tony Farmer’s sales, they’re actually helping them. He can’t keep luxury gas guzzlers in stock 재고로 갖고 있다. “If gas is $4 a gallon, I think everybody around here will be buying 2 or 3 Escalades <자동차 이름> Cadillac Escalades.” That’s because President Bush’s hometown is a big oil producer.

 

And with crude at nearly $75 a barrel, good times are back in west Texas. Neighborhoods and banks are sprouting up 급속히 성장하다, downtown streets are getting a facelift 외부개장. And there are more jobs than people to fill them. In the last year, car sales have jumped 23%. Permits for new homes shot up 50%, pushing the overall economic growth in the Midland area up 11%.

 

Oil workers are in such demand that George Batista left an entry-level 초보적인 job at Merrill Lynch. “Money talks 돈이면 된다, right?” With overtime, foreman 현장주임 Gerry Arnold, will make $120,000 this year. “In the process of getting the house, new vehicles…”

 

There’s a saying here in Midland that every oil boom is followed by another 4-letter word, bust 파산. And you don’t have to look far to find signs of the last big one. Empty buildings are scars from the mid 80s when oil crashed 추락하다 to $9 a barrel. Oilman 유전 경영자, 석유 업자, Don Sparks, survived, but saw his friends go bankrupt. He says, this time, not everyone’s getting rich.
