<군사> 미군 전략 수정

Tonight, a new strategy for Afghanistan. The president considers shifting the focus from the Taliban to Al Qaeda even after a deadly new Taliban attack. Our correspondent was there when it happened.

Continuing coverage of Afghanistan: The Road Ahead. Good evening. Katie is off. The Taliban struck again today in the heart of Afghanistan’s capital. A devastating지독한 suicide bombing outside India’s embassy in Kabul. It is the second Taliban attack on that building in a year. 17 people were killed today and at least 76 others were wounded. Most of the victims? Afghan civilians on their way to work. We’ll have more on the attack in a moment.

It came as president Obama and his national security team are considering a major shift in US strategy in Afghanistan, one that would identify Al Qaeda and not the Taliban as America’s chief adversary. Chip Reid is our chief White House correspondent. Good evening Chip. Well, good evening Maggie. After three meetings with his war council, the president appears to be getting close to settling on결정하다 a war strategy and it’s already drawing fire.

White House officials say the focus of the president’s strategy will be on defeating Al Qaeda in Pakistan while downplaying경시하다 the need to completely eliminate the Taliban in Afghanistan. The Taliban, the White House argues, simply does not threaten US security the way Al Qaeda does. The strategy would turn the remote mountains of Pakistan into the center of the war. The White House says that while there are only about a hundred Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, there are thousands in Pakistan including Osama Bin Laden and his top deputies using Special Forces, a more aggressive effort from the Pakistani army, the strategy has recently led to a series of successful attacks on Al Qaeda. “Because of our efforts, Al Qaeda and its allies have not only lost operational capacity, they’ve lost legitimacy정통성 and credibility믿음.

Analysts say the strategy would require fewer than the 40,000 additional troops. General Stanly McChrystal says he needs to defeat the Taliban. The president though could still call for a smaller number of additional troops to keep the Taliban in check and train afghan police and military forces.

But critics say the strategy is deeply flawed금이 가다 that without a full-fledged완전한 effort to crush the Taliban, it will retake control of Afghanistan and reopen the door to Al Qaeda which will establish bases there just as they did before 911. The White House says that the Taliban is now nowhere close to actually taking control in Afghanistan

and they say the president will devote whatever resources it takes to make sure that never happens. Maggie?
