It came as president Obama and his national security team are considering a major shift in US strategy in Afghanistan, one that would identify Al Qaeda and not the Taliban as America’s chief adversary적. After three meetings with his war council, the president appears to be getting close to settling on결정하다 a war strategy and it’s already drawing fire.
White House officials say the focus of the president’s strategy will be on defeating Al Qaeda in Pakistan while downplaying경시하다 the need to completely eliminate the Taliban in Afghanistan. The Taliban, the White House argues, simply does not threaten US security the way Al Qaeda does. The strategy would turn the remote mountains of Pakistan into the center of the war. The White House says that while there are only about a hundred Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, there are thousands in
Analysts say the strategy would require fewer than the 40,000 additional troops. General Stanly McChrystal says he needs to defeat the Taliban. The president though could still call for a smaller number of additional troops to keep the Taliban in check and train afghan police and military forces.
