Welcome back. You’re watching World Business Today. All this week we put an eye on South Korea.
The country’s capital
Last year, Seoul beat up깜짝 놀라게 하다 20 rivals including Singapore and Dubai to be named the world design capital in 2010. One industry group representing more than 100,000 designers. It’s sprucing up꾸미다 its streets and parks to better appeal to locals and tourists and making way for a mega monument by Zaha Hadid. Star architect was commissioned to임명된 create the $98 million Dong Dae Mun Design Park. Why? Something the city’s chief design officer calls Design Amax. “… that the to improve the economic impact of design, so to improve the economy using design!”
It’s something Korean tech giants have known for a while. In the ideal lab of LG Electronics, you can plainly see the design focused behind hot selling handsets like the Chocolate, the Lollipop, and straight out of the James Bond, the LG Watch Phone. It has a touch screen, tiny but workable, you just speak directly into the watch, you can even make video calls.
Chief handset designer Young Ho Kim shows me his creations including the crystal. A touch screen phone you can actually see through. A daringly대담한 참신한 high-end design for a bare얼마 안되는 market, but LG has actually managed to gain market share during the downturn from pocket cell phones to towering skyscrapers. Seoul’s devoted to attracting the best talent and international attention.
Architect James Von Klemperer regularly flies in from New York to bring sizzle열풍 to the Seoul cityscape. His firm is behind the avant-garde Dong Bu finance center. A block more sculpture than skyscraper. “Korea is looking for new design because it’s very inventive people and a country that’s proven that its inventiveness in design of electronic goods……..a fabrics of industrial products is winning. It’s competing around the world” He says his designs, though imported, are uniquely Korean, bold, and spicy a bit like Korean food. Kristie Lu Stout, CNN, Seoul.
