(국제) 케냐 가뭄과 기근

25 years ago, images of the starving African children triggered the biggest global charity drive ever including the live aid cancer…..concert. But now history is repeating itself. Today, Ethiopia appealed for emergency aid because of a severe drought that has put 23 million people at risk of starvation across east Africa and led to violence as well. Our digital reporter Dana Hughes is in Kenya.

Most of northern Kenya hasn’t seen rain in over a year. Where water once flowed, people now dig for their daily supply. Kenya’s experiencing its worst drought in over a decade, putting millions at risk of famine. Grass is scarce. Cattle are dying off at an alarming rate. “The situation in Kenya is absolutely dramatic in this moment. People are pulling their children out of school. Malnutrition rates are rising.”

In this Samburu National Reserve, elephants are dying, too. 25 in the last two months. “It’s desperate. It’s the worst that I’ve seen in the last 12 years.” “What chance do you get the baby to survive?” “I’ll give the baby a 50% chance of this time.” “Only 50%?” “Only 50%.” This watering hole is actually outside of the reserve dug by locals to provide water for their cattle. But with water being so scarce, the elephants have to come here. And the more they come, the more trouble they get into.

We found this elephant poached for his valuable ivory tusk and for his meat. A sure sign that people here are desperately hungry. So desperate that rival tribes are launching violent raids to steal cattle and lands for grazing. And early morning raid on this Samburu village killed hundreds of cattle and left 32 people dead including women and children. Now the men have armed themselves to protect the village and what little resources it has. They wanted our lands, says this man, and our water. The fighting isn’t over. And the fight for survival won’t be over, many fear, unless it rains soon. Dana Hughes, ABC News, Samburu, Kenya.
