Profits at Ford Motor Company, the only big US automaker not to take a bailout, but what’s behind these upbeat낙관적인 numbers? Going global. As it gets worse here at home, the swine flu pandemic spreads around the world forcing some drastic measures. Snap, crackle and stop. Have you seen the claim they’re making on the cereal box. Tonight, why critics are calling them out on it.

And the play’s the thing where you might least expect it. Making a difference with Shakespeare. Also tonight for the first time, anywhere President Kennedy’s voice on one secret White House tapes. Nightly News begins now. From NBC News world headquarters in New York, this is NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams.

Good evening. Of the so called Detroit big three auto makers, they were the only ones not to take taxpayer’s bailout money and there is evidence tonight Ford Motor Company is being richly rewarded for that decision. Ford announced today they made $1 billion profit in the third quarter. They’ve stopped bleeding cash for now. And while there is more you should know like their remaining billions in debt, it’s been a good long while since there was good news like this from Detroit. We begin tonight with our car guy CNBC’s Phil Lebou is at a dealership in Dearborn. Phil? Good evening.

Good evening, Brian. This is what the people at Ford have been waiting and working for. A profitable quarter, further proof this auto giant is well on the road to recovery. From Dearborn to Wall Street, a huge surprise from Ford earning almost a billion dollars last quarter and turning a profit in north America for the first time in four years. How did Ford do it? Last quarter, it cut costs by $1 billion operating more efficient plants losing almost 5,000 jobs while boosting revenue in the US by $1.9 billion, thanks to popular new models.

Cash for clunkers also helped. But Ford CEO says its company would’ve been profitable even without the clunkers program. Ironically being profitable could come at a cost, as Ford negotiates a new contract with the united auto workers. Today 70% of the union’s rank and file보통 사원 rejected Ford’s latest offer which would also banned the UAW from striking over wages when the current contract expires. A concession many workers don’t want to give a now profitable Ford.
