Good evening. Normally, it happens away from public view. Usually only a handful of military officials and family members are there to witness the arrival of servicemen and women killed in war. But early this morning, he left the White house after midnight, president Obama attended the simple, somber침울한, dignified위엄 있는 transfer at Delaware’s Dover air force base as the bodies of 18 Americans killed in Afghanistan came home. The ultimate최후의 price of war and a factor the president must weigh as he decides whether to commit more troops to the fight. Jake Tapper reports from the White House.

 

The president arrived at Dover air force base after midnight. Landing near the air force C-17 containing the remains of the 18 fallen Americans killed Monday and Tuesday in Afghanistan in the deadliest 2-day stretch of the war for US forces. The president entered that cargo plane where standing before the flag draped remains of the 18 men, he said a prayer.

 

He then stood and saluted during the dignified transfers of the 18 men. In a chapel예배 on base, president Obama met with 14 families including those of US army sergeant Dale Griffin who was 29. A star wrestler from Terre Haute, Indiana. And three DEA agents. Michael Weston, a graduate of Stanford and Harvard Law. Chad Michael, a former SWAT team member from Tampa. And Forest Leamon who is due home in January just in time for the birth of his first child.

 

President Bush visited with hundreds of families of fallen soldiers, but never went to Dover. In April, after president Obama lifted the 18-year ban on media coverage of these arrivals, he told aides he wanted to participate. The president’s trip to Dover comes as he weighs sending as many as 40,000 more troops to Afghanistan. A decision expected to be announced within weeks. On his flight home, president Obama thanked his military aide for arranging the trip. And no one said a word for the remainder of the 45 minute flight. The president walked into the White House alone.
