Well, when the going gets tough, the tough go shopping. Right? Well, thanks to one company in Hong Kong, you can now use your designer handbag as collateral담보로 내놓는…..collateral, yes, to get a short-term loan to do what else more shopping. Anna Coren shows us how it all works. The designer handbag, a constant fixture in “sex and the city,” women were in love with them. “Women have an obsession with handbags. They have personal relationships with their handbag. It’s something you carry with you all the time. It has your life in it.”

Here in Hong Kong, if it’s not Chanel, Louis Vuitton, or any other big fashion houses, then it’s not worth wearing on your own. This love affair with luxury handbags has caught the attention of Yes Lady Finance co-owned by Byron Yiu by allowing them to borrow against their bags up to 70% of its value and the interest charge is lower than other pawn brokers. The only catch? The handbag must be designer, relatively new, and in good condition.

We have a Miumiu bag here. If I was a customer, Byron, what would be the procedure? For this Miumiu, you probably get Hong Kong $2,000-$3,000. The most important thing is that the bag is a relatively new design. For this, Byron will lend me US $300. But the most expensive bag he’s loaned against was a crocodile skin Hermes handbag valued at $39,000. The owner got $25,000. The business has been operating for just over a month. And of the 40 women who applied for loans, 30 were successful.

Once approved, what’s become collateral is sealed in a secure bag and stored in a room under 24 hour surveillance. The handbag loan company. Is this a profitable business for you? With the recession in the past half a year or so, it’s possible that some customers need cash urgently. And they might have keepsake handbags(기념품으로 간직하다),  they don’t want to sell, but are willing to use their bags to get a loan. So with the moment, yeah, we are satisfied.

The obsession with designer brands is not only here in Hong Kong, but also in Mainland China. Whether it’d be handbags, watches, shoes, or clothes, if it’s from a big fashion house, then it takes status symbol showing power and wealth. And this appetite for luxury isn’t disappearing any time soon with China expected to surpass global market, in sales of designer brands in the next decade.
