Good evening. Finally a monthly jobs report that actually has some….some signs of encouragement.
The economy lost 11,000 jobs last month. The significant number to be sure for the thousands of Americans affected. But far less than economists had predicted and far fewer than the number of jobs lost in January. The unemployment rate fell from 10.2% to an even 10%. The question, of course, is this just one month phenomenon? We begin with Betsy Stark. Betsy?
Charlie? It was the 23rd consecutive month that country has lost jobs. But even so, today’s report was the best jobs report the nation has seen in two years. Today’s report took just about everyone by surprise. The improvements came from several corners of the economy. There were much smaller losses in the hard hit construction, transportation, and financial industries, and hiring picked up in public education, at department stores, and especially at temp agencies(임시 직장 구인업체) which typically signals better job numbers ahead. Californi Jerret, a laid off New York City financial analyst just finished one temp job and starts another assignment next week.
Economists credit the government’s massive stimulus spending경기부양 지출 with getting the job market to this point. It has certainly helped Jonathan Freiden’s Missouri-based educational toy company. With help from stimulus grants경기부양인증 to head start, he’s been able to rehire a third of the workers he laid off. “We are very positively optimistic about what tomorrow will bring.”
The White House is more hopeful, too. But with more than 15 million Americans still out of work and another 9 million plus forced to work part time because full time jobs are unavailable. Administration officials were careful today not to declare mission accomplished.
