Welcome to World News. Tonight, Verdict. An Italian jury decides the fate of an American student accused of the brutal murder of her British roommate. Late today, a 22-year-old American student Amanda Knox was found guilty in Italy of murdering her British roommate. She was immediately sentenced to 26 years in an Italian prison. Prosecutors accused Knox, her boyfriend and a third man of sexually assaulting and then killing Meredith Kercher after an argument. Elizabeth Vargas is in Perugia, Italy and joins us tonight with news of the verdict. Elizabeth?

The jury deliberated숙고하다 nearly 11 hours before giving its verdict tonight to….it was delivered판결을 선포하다 to a courtroom that was jam-packed with media and press from around the world, both the US and Europe. This case has sparked international headlines and deep controversy over the evidence. As the verdict was red, a crowd outside the courtroom burst into cheers. Inside the courtroom, Amanda Knox and her family began to sob흐느끼다.

 

It was more than two years ago that Amanda Knox came to Perugia fulfilling her dream to study Italian. A dream shared by her British roommate Meredith Kercher. But two months later, Kercher was brutally murdered in her bedroom. And within days, Knox and her new Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were arrested. The Italian and British press vilified비방하다 중상하다 Knox, calling her behavior immediately after the murder, unemotional냉정한 and inappropriate부적당한.

 

Prosecutors rested눈 시선이 쏠리다 their case without ever explaining how Knox could’ve killed her roommate without leaving a spec of DNA in the small bedroom where the murder took place. That same room was covered with DNA from the victim and a third man Rudy Gardey who has already been convicted of the crime.

 

Amanda Knox’s family does plan to appeal this guilty of verdict and, of course, a sentence of 26 years. But within moments, Knox was whisked사라지다 out of the court and away from her family and taken in a van that just passed just moments ago. There is a chance of parole가석방. There is also the chance that the US government may work out a deal where she can serve that sentence here in the United States or back in the United States.
