(긴급뉴스) 항공기 테러 불발

On the broadcast this evening, terror scare. An emergency on a Detroit bound jet with hundreds onboard. What happened when one of the passengers allegedly tried to blow up the plane? From NBC News world headquarters in New York, this is NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. Good evening. I’m Carl Quintanilla in for Brian Williams. Airline security in this country is on heightened alert tonight after a Nigerian man onboard a Delta Northwest flight allegedly tried to blow up the plane.

The flight made an emergency landing in Detroit today. The man was turned over to the FBI. The president Obama has told officials to boost airline security. And chances are you’ll notice it just as holiday vacations are in full force. There are many questions tonight including whether the suspect had a link to Al Qaeda. We have two reports we begin tonight with NBC’s Peter Alexander. Peter, good evening.

Late this afternoon on the tarmac활주로 at Detroit metropolitan airport, federal investigators and bomb squad members examined the Delta Northwest jet for explosive devices. Federal officials tell NBC News one of the passengers, a 23-year-old Nigerian national, on Northwest flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit allegedly attempted to blow up the plane by trying to ignite a powdery substance가루물질 or device in his lap무릎, injuring himself and two others.

The flight with 278 passengers onboard was forced to make an emergency landing in Detroit just before noon Eastern Time after a smoke indicator light went on in the plane. An airline official says two passengers noticed smoke and a third passenger restrained제지하다 the suspect who is now being treated at the University of Michigan medical center. The suspect departed Lagos, Nigeria late Thursday night on KLM flight 588 to Amsterdam where he changed planes and boarded today’s Delta Northwest flight to Detroit. “Two issues. The first, do this individual act alone or is he part of a broader conspiracy? And are there any plots at work right now? Is it just an isolated incident? Are there other potential plots against other aircraft? That’s what the US counter-terrorism communities are examining right now.”

The mid-air scare is drawing comparisons to Richard Reid, the so-called shoe bomber. Reid, a British citizen and self proclaimed Al Qaeda operative, was convicted of terrorism after trying to light explosives in his shoes while onboard the American Airlines flight from Paris to Miami Christmas week eight years ago. And tonight, the federal government tells NBC News it has warned all in bound flight headed to the US of today’s incident. And for its part, the Department of Homeland Security, Carl, says that passengers may notice additional screening measures put into place on both domestic and international flights.
