(날씨) 전역 25년만의 강추위

On World News, braving the deep freeze together. Well, this turned out to be the coldest winter in 25 years. From the global resources of ABC News, this is ABC World News with Diane Sawyer. Good evening and a good new year to you. A year that begins with bone chilling cold looking to become the coldest winter in 25 years stretching from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. Our weather editor Sam Champion says two thirds of the country is shivering몸을 떨다 tonight and he leads us off. Sam?

Good evening, Diane. We’re talking about two thirds of the country, as you said, facing these bitter cold temperatures. It’s beginning to remind us of the winter of the 1985 when big chunks of arctic air would drop and cover at least half of the country, we’ve had cold temperatures since then, but not covering this much of the country at one time.

There is no escaping the frigid몹시 추운 fighting cold today. In International Falls, Minnesota, the actual temperature hit a brutal 38 degrees below zero. Hundreds of schools closed in at least five states due to winter weather. There were winter weather watches, warnings or advisories in 21 states. What’s unusual is this New Year’s cold snap일시적 한파 is dipping deep into the heart of the south where temperatures settled well below freezing. Pipes were bursting in places like Atlanta, Georgia with the coldest temperature this season this morning’s 18 degrees, and more to spreading, there may be more cold, even snow on the way.

Even further south in the citrus groves감귤농장 of Florida and the strawberry fields of Louisiana, farmers are working to save crops from a freeze. Keeping cover doesn’t just work for crops on a day so many Americans had to work outside, we asked what were their survival secrets. “It takes some a little bit more time, it probably takes an extra 10-15 minutes to put on all the different layers that you need to survive in the cold.” In Minneapolis, these patrolmen suit up, cover up and cover up again. “Today, I probably have…..probably 6 or 7 layers on.”

And the forecast is for a reinforcing shot of cold air to get into the country by the end of the week. Now that means even colder air, even further south, and there could be, Diane, a snow storm into the Deep South with that by the end of the week. All right. Sam, our thanks to you.
