Auschwitz was the scene of one of the greatest horrors the world has ever known. And tonight, here’s outrage around the world after someone stole the sign at the entrance to the World War II Nazi death camp. The camp in Poland was left standing after the war. And the sign remained a painful, but important reminder of what happened there and the vow that it would never happen again. Richard Roth has more.

 

In a place of horror and suffering, it was the infamous motto악명 높은 표어 of Nazi cruelty. Arching over the entry to Auschwitz, a 16-foot-long iron sign that said, “Work sets you free.” At dawn today, it was missing, stolen, according to Polish police, by thieves who entered Auschwitz through a gap in a wall overnight and cut through barbed wire가시철사 to get away.

 

A profanity신성 모독, 불경, said a spokesman for the Auschwitz Museum, it is unbelievable, sad, and frustrating. A replica of the 90-pound sign was quickly bolted into place. But the theft was condemned as sacrilege죄받을 일 by survivors of the holocaust. More than a million prisoners, mostly Jews, died in this Nazi death camp between 1940 and 1945. Many of them exterminated몰살하다 in gas chambers.
