Tonight, putting on the brakes. Toyota stops the sale of eight different models because the gas pedal could get stuck. I’m Katie Couric. Also tonight, the new face of terrorism. Is the country prepared for a dangerous new decade? Meet the enemy in our special series: Where America Stands. And lights, camera, Avatar. Does this new way of making movies mean a sequel속편 is simply a click away? From CBS News world headquarters in New York, this is the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.
Good evening, everyone. We’re beginning with breaking news. Toyota has just done something no car maker in this country has ever done before. It has just told its dealers to stop selling eight of its models at least temporarily. The same models it recalled last week to fix a potentially dangerous defect. Their gas pedals could get stuck. Nancy Cordes is in Washington tonight. Nancy? Toyota is also stopping production of these vehicles next week. This is really unprecedented미증유의.
It is completely unprecedented, Katie, and one industry analyst described it tonight to us. Like the recall of Tylenol by Johnson & Johnson back in 1982, it’s affecting four major production plants as you mentioned. and 2.3 million vehicles at a time when the industry can scarcely afford it. The suspension of sales include some of Toyota’s most popular models including the Camry and the Corolla. In total, eight models are being pulled for now. Some are 2010 models, but others date all the way back to 2005. Not on the suspension lists are any Lexus or Cyan models.
The problem in some of the Toyota models is that the gas pedal can get stuck underneath floor mats and even in some vehicles without the presence of floor mats. The sale suspension will shut down production lines at four American factories. The malfunction미작동 has been linked to half a dozen deaths and industry experts say the fact that Toyota is going to these lengths now indicates that it either doesn’t have full control over the problem or hasn’t quite figured out how to fix it yet. And again, Nancy? These same models were recalled last week. So people who own them should be bringing them or should’ve already brought them back to the dealership. Meanwhile, how does Toyota deal with this problem in the long term?
