(정치) 연두교서의 역사

The state of the union. Just a speech, right? But always so much more. From that first moment 220 years ago when George Washington urged presidential modesty겸손 and spoke just five minutes to Thomas Jefferson who thought the state of the union reeked냄새가 강하게 나다 of monarchy군주제 and sent a written message instead, to the modern era, ushered in도입되다 by FDR with radio and television.

The state of the union has been in an arena무대. Opponents sit on their hands, sometimes boo야유.

Advocates shout and cheer. And we hear the phrases that etched아로새기다 their way onto the walls of our common history. “Madam Speaker. The President of the United States.” “This administration today here and now declares an unconditional war on poverty in America.” “The era of big government is over.” “States like these and their terrorist allies constitute an axis of evil.”

In bold times and in bed times. “Needless to say, it would be understatement절제된 표현 if I were not to admit that the year 1973 was not a very easy year for me personally or for my family.” From Watergate to a chastened혼나서 누그러진 President standing in the wreckage of a healthcare defeat. “I know that last year, as the evidence indicates, we bit off물어 끊다 more than we could chew.”

An accidental President tries honesty about the reeling비틀거리는 economy. “I want to speak very bluntly. I’ve got bad news. And I don’t expect much, if any applause 박수갈채가 있다손 치더라도.” Through it all, we still come to laugh. “Incidentally, I’m delighted you’re celebrating the 100th birthday of the congress. It’s always a pleasure to congratulate someone with more birthdays than I’ve had.”

And to be surprised. Searching for the words that sometimes like a mirror remind us who we are. “America isn’t finished. Her dead best days have just begun.”
