Guns, race, celebrity. A basketball star in a heated charge and countercharge반격 반소 today. From the global resources of ABC News, this is ABC World News. And up next, a new headline grabbing mix-up, super stars and guns. And tonight the question of race thrown in. NBA star Gilbert Arenas was suspended출장정지 for having guns in the locker room and making the joke of it all. But a lot of people were not laughing as Christ Cuomo found out today.
Here’s what we know. On December 21st after a game, the Washington Wizards’ basketball star Gilbert Arenas allegedly brought as many as four handguns into the locker room as part of a dispute over a gambling debt with teammate Javaris Crittenton who allegedly responded by pulling and chambering around in a gun of his own. Then a firestorm of shifting stories and police investigations. Despite potential criminal charges, Arenas said first, played off the gun play as a practical joke. “I’m a goofball멍청이. And, you know, that’s what I am. So even during something like this, you know, I’m going to make fun of it.”
But the bigger concern may be how familiar these episodes have become in sport. “There’re a lot of weapons in professional basketball.” In the NBA alone, there’s been a gun-related player suspension출장정지 almost every year since 2002. Most recently, Delonte West of the Cleveland Cavaliers was charged with illegal gun possession. Former NBA star Jason Williams is awaiting retrial for manslaughter and was also arrested for illegal gun possession.
And in the NFL, star receiver Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself with a handgun in a nightclub was convicted of illegal possession and sentenced to two years in prison. The NBA actually has its own security force, comprised으로 구성되다 of 100 current and former law enforcement personnel who follow each of its teams. But clearly, more still needs to be done.
Even Al Sharpton called for Arenas to be punished and accused the league of being soft, stating “It’s almost as if people are saying, ‘Well, we don’t expect anything better from our black athletes.’” renas then quickly took a shot at Sharpton in a twit to his fans and mocked놀리다 himself as the new John Wane. Then there was this. Arenas pretending to shoot a gun before a game. That was enough for NBA commissioner David Stern. He suspended Arenas indefinitely.
While the criminal investigation continues, Arenas says bank account has already been hit. Each game he misses costs him an estimated $147,200. But the price of gun play could be much higher. Christ Cuomo, NBC News, New York.
