On Our Broadcast tonight from Vancouver, the world stage opening ceremonies at these Winter Olympics, but sadly we are off to a tragic start! An athlete has died on a track that a lot of people were saying was just too fast. Nightly news begins now! This is NBC Nightly news with Brian Williams, reporting tonight from the Olympic winter Games in Vancouver

And good evening from what will be our temporary home here in Vancouver and it all gets underway here tonight. The first ever indoor opening ceremony as Canada brings up the curtain on these Olympic Games. Athletes from 96 nations, visitors from many more, 25,000 hotel rooms. They are coming in by land and sea and air. A good many of them are making the 3 hour or so drive north across the border from the States from Seattle. The spectacle will air live tonight. And a good many Americans have reason to be home inside in front of the TV. There was measurable snowfall today in 49 of the 50 United States. More on that a bit later on. Sadly tonight we have to begin our reporting from here with a tragic story. These games are off to a sad start before being officially underway. And an early warning here. The video tape of what happened here today maybe tough for a lot of folks to watch. A competitor in the Luge was killed here today during a practice run. Everybody knew the Luge track here was the fastest in the world. Today it turned violently unsafe. We’re going to begin with NBC Chris Jensing. She is about 90 miles north of us here at Whistler where events like Luge and alpine skiing are held. Chris, good evening. This accident has sent shockwaves through the Olympic Community and I do want to reiterate반복하다 again that this video is very difficult to watch. I can tell you that here in the village of Whistler, they have a large video screens setup and people were watching it. There was a loud audible gasp탄식 that went out when people saw what happened there. The sled was already on the final turn of the track on the Luger’s final run of the day when the devastating accident happened. Nodar Kumaritashvili of the former Soviet Republic of Georgia lost control when airborne over a concrete vault아치형 지붕 and struck at unpadded패드가 안된 steel pole just feet from the finish line. Emergency medical personnel were on the scene in less than a minute. And Nodar Kumaritashvili was quickly airlifted to a trauma center, but he couldn’t be revived. Earlier in the day, the 2 time defending men’s gold medalist from Italy had crashed higher on the track. And a Rumanian woman was briefly unconscious기절한 after crashing her sled. Just 2 of more than a dozen accidents in this Olympic Luge training!
