The first wave sent diners running from the restaurant, then the second, topping 30 feet the height of a 30-story building shattering the windows. Here’s that impact again slow down. One after another, three huge waves. Scientists believe so called rogue waves are formed when smaller waves join together or by a combination of wind, tide and currents. These giant waves are rare, but devastating. Four passengers were injured when a 70-foot wave hit this cruise ship off the coast of Georgia in 2005. A few months earlier in the pacific, Semester at Sea student were battered by 55 foot waves. Mediterranean Sea yesterday was only a little rough that Louis Majesty’s Captain Haft changed course to avoid. The worst of it, those giant waves just came out of nowhere. The Louis Majesty is bound from Cartagena, Spain toward Genoa, Italy when she was caught in a rising sea off the Spanish coast. The 680-foot long ship with 1930 passengers and crew on board was turned to face the oncoming waves. The safest position to avoid being capsized. But a large train of monster waves, passengers say, three of them rose up and slammed over the bows.
Even a modern vessel, this one is 18-years-old, can’t shrug어깨를 으쓱하다 off that much angry water. The surviving passengers and the ship were brought to Barcelona. “People were running everywhere, panic actually.” The Louis Majesty is being repaired. The rest of the cruise cancelled.
